USM professors Rob Sanford and Joe Staples, and recent USM graduate Sarah Snowman developed a new approach to gauging students’ understanding of ecosystems and the environment. It’s called the “Draw-an-Ecosystem” task.
The task asks students to draw and label the parts and interactions within an ecosystem. The students do two drawings, one before a lecture on ecosystems, and one after. The comparison of the two drawings allows the teacher to see what the students gained from the lecture.
The approach was published in the Winter 2017 issue of Science Education and Civic Engagement.
