University of Southern Maine residence halls in Gorham are ready for new and returning students to move in this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28. Transfer and freshman students move in from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday and upperclassmen move in from 8-noon on Sunday. Saturday events for students include meals, a class photo, games, socials, and a welcome dinner with President Botman. Botman also will be greeting students and their parents from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday. For a complete schedule of the Gorham campus see Welcome Weekend.
Welcome events continue the following week on both the Portland and Gorham campuses with commuter welcome tables and coffee nights, a work-study job fair, and the 11th Annual Husky Fest scheduled from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Thursday, September 1 on the Portland campus. Husky Fest is USM’s largest event featuring a BBQ, live music, a rock climbing wall, inflatable obstacle course, dunk tank and resource fair.
New this year is “First Friday USM!” on Friday, September 2, an event that begins with a 4 p.m. BBQ on the Portland campus, followed by a choice of attending a Sea Dogs game, a duck boat or trolley tour of Portland, or a shuttle to Portland’s First Friday Art Walk. At 8 p.m., the roof of the parking garage on Bedford St. will be transformed into a “drive-in movie” where students, family and friends are invited to watch “Pirates of the Caribbean IV.”
For a complete schedule of all of USM’s welcome events, see USM Welcome 2011.
