USM Recognizes Scholarship Students

The following USM students were awarded scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year. Recipients are listed below in alphabetical order by hometown. 

Bowdoin:
Catherine Marie Prendergast of Bowdoin, a nursing student, was awarded the Boyne Foundation Nursing Scholarship. She is a 2009 graduate of Morse High School and is engaged to be married to Justin Cressey of Bowdoin. She is the daughter of Norma Ramsay of Lewiston and Edward Prendergast of Bangor.

Buxton:
Anastasia Skibicki of Westbrook, a nursing student, was awarded the Women’s Board of the Maine General Hospital Nursing Scholarship.  She is a 2008 graduate of Bonny Eagle High School and the daughter of Douglas Skibicki of Buxton.

Caribou:
Casey Mae Nichols of Caribou, a nursing student, received the Pat Geary Community Health Award. She is a 2011 graduate of Caribou High School and is the daughter of Tracey and Peggy Nichols of Caribou.

Freeport:
Katee Poulin of Freeport, an accounting student, was awarded the George D. Woodward Accounting Scholarship. She is a 2011 graduate of Freeport High School and attended Endicott College in Beverly, Ma. She is the daughter of Sue LaPierre and Scott Poulin, both of Freeport.

Allison Gray of Freeport, a graduate student nurse practitioner, was awarded the Martha Skoner Scholarship. She and her husband, Casey Clougherty, reside in Freeport with their three children.

Gorham:
Nathaniel Marcet of Gorham, an accounting student, was awarded the Daniel L. Nickerson Accounting Scholarship. He is a 2010 graduate of Gorham High School and is the son of Gary and Susan Crimp-Marcet of Gorham.

Darcy Jo Thayer of Gorham, a nursing student, was awarded the Mabel G. Skillin Nursing Scholarship. She is a 2004 graduate of Gray-New Gloucester High School and is the daughter of Beryl Thayer and Henry Thayer, both of New Gloucester.

Lewiston:
Michelle Alyse Nadeau of Lewiston, a nursing student was awarded the Women’s Board of the Maine General Hospital Nursing Scholarship. She is a 2010 graduate of Royal Academy in Gray and is the daughter of Peter and Janice Nadeau of Lewiston. 

Zamzam Mohamed of Lewiston, a nursing student, was awarded the Mabel G. Skillin Nursing Scholarship. A native of Somalia, she is a 1999 graduate of a Kenyan high school and a 2009 graduate of Central Maine Community College with an associate degree in liberal studies. She is the daughter of Halima Ahmed, also of Lewiston.

Caitlyn Maureen O’Connell of Lewiston, a nursing student, was awarded the Mabel G. Skillin Nursing Scholarship. She is a 2009 graduate of Mountain Valley High School in Rumford and is the daughter of Greg O’Connell of Lewiston and Linda and Peter LaPlante of Rumford.

Poland:
Taylor-Paige Harrison of Poland, a nursing student, was awarded the Boyne Foundation Nursing Scholarship. She is a 1998 graduate of Babylon Junior-Senior High School in Babylon, New York and is the daughter of Deborah Moran of Greene and the late Victor Harrison.

Portland:
Heather Currier of Portland, a marketing student, was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society. She is a 2001 graduate of Dexter Regional High School and a 2004 graduate of the University of Maine Orono with a B.A. in journalism and advertising. She is the daughter of Rebecca Currier of Skowhegan.

Mehrnaz Ghorashi of Portland, a graduate student of nursing, was awarded the Mildred A. Roche/Alyce G. Green Memorial Scholarship. She is a 2003 graduate of Blacksburg, Va., High School and has a B.S. in nursing from the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She is the daughter of Mehrdaad Ghorashi and Marjaneh Nikpour of Portland.

Isaiah Santiago Mendelsohn Mexer of Portland, a nursing student, was awarded the Osher Reentry Scholarship and the Boyne Foundation Nursing Scholarship. He attended Cabrillo College in Apros, Ca. and is the son of Peter Mexer of Marblehead, Ma. Mexer and his wife, Laura, reside in Portland.

Chloe Pamela Paul of Portland, a nursing student, was awarded the Boyne Foundation Nursing Scholarship and was accepted into the Geary Cooperative Program at Maine Medical Center. She is a 2010 graduate of Orono High School and is the daughter of Tracy Cobb and Owen Oakes of Orono.

Lucie Tardif of Portland, a Media Studies student, was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship, the Gorman Scholarship, the Osher Reentry Scholarship and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honor Society. She is a 1974 graduate of Winslow High School and a 2012 graduate of Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. She is the daughter of Mrs. Louis Tardif of Winslow and the late Louis Tardif.

Sidney:
Kristina A. Goranson of Sidney, a nursing student, was awarded the Women’s Board of the Maine General Hospital Nursing Scholarship. She is a 2011 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta and attended Kennebec Valley Community College in Waterville.  She is the daughter of Marianne Goranson of Winthrop and Steve Goranson of Augusta.

Woolwich:
Kirstie Ingmundson of Woolwich, a nursing student, was awarded the Mabel G. Skillin Nursing Scholarship. She is a 2007 graduate of Morse High School in Bath and attended Ithaca College in New York. She is the daughter of David and Kathleen Ingmundson of Woolwich.

Yarmouth:
Nicholas James Costello of Yarmouth, a graduate student of science in education, was awarded the National Science Foundation Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship. He is a 2006 graduate of Yarmouth High School and a 2010 graduate of the University of Vermont with a B.S. in environmental science.  He is the son of Jim and Beth Costello of Yarmouth.
