USM School of Business named ‘best choice for Portland-area professionals’

PORTLAND – The University of Southern Maine’s School of Business is ‘the best choice for Portland-area professionals,’ according to The Princeton Review. The education services company features the school in the new 2013 edition of its annual guidebook “The Best 296 Business Schools.”

According to Robert Franek, Princeton Review senior vice president-publisher, "We consider the University of Southern Maine one of the best institutions a student could attend to earn an MBA.” The USM School of Business is the only school in the state of Maine to be selected.

The top schools, 280 of which are in the US and 16 international, were selected based on institutional data and survey results of more than 19,000 students worldwide. Student surveys focused on academics, student body, and campus life, and were conducted during 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

The book’s editors describe the USM School of Business as “a traditional business school with the rigors that come with it” and faculty who have a strong background in their fields. Current students surveyed for the publication praised the program’s strong academics, flexible course delivery, and connection with area and regional businesses. One student noted, “Maine business plays a central role in the curriculum, and the professors do an excellent job using case studies from local companies.” Recent student internships have included placements within Unum, the Portland Seadogs, L.L. Bean, IDEXX, the Boston Celtics, Key Bank, and AAA Northern New England.

“We’re honored to be recognized by our students and our peers as a leading school of business worldwide,” said Joseph McDonnell, dean of the College of Management and Human Service. “This is a direct reflection of our outstanding faculty and their commitment to student-centered learning. We’ll continue to foster relationships between the university and the business community to provide students with hands-on, real-world learning opportunities.”

The USM School of Businesses is accredited by AACSB International and offers both the MBA and a BS in business administration, with majors in general management, sport management, accounting, finance, and marketing.
