USM's 17th Annual Outdoor Band Concert kicks off the fall season with favorites, visiting artists and more

17th annual USM Outdoor Band Concert


Celebrate fall and 17 years of the classic “Old-Fashioned Outdoor Band Concert” with the University of Southern Maine School of Music (SoM) on the green on the USM Gorham Campus, see a free performance of Chinese opera by a visiting troupe of professional actors and musicians, and let the USM voice faculty serve you up a variety of music at the October Faculty Concert Series, featuring USM’s Malinda Haslett, soprano, and guest artist Jonathan Boyd, tenor (San Francisco Opera, L'opera de Nice, Teatro Argentina).

Free, open to the public, no ticket required

The classic, and favorite, New England tradition continues! At 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, join the USM Concert Band on the green outside of Corthell Hall on the Gorham Campus for the 17th annual Old-Fashioned Outdoor Band Concert. Program to include music by John Mackey, Scott Joplin and others. Local high school students participating in the All-State Instrumental Boot Camp that morning will also be featured in "El Capitan" by John Philip Sousa. The concert is free, and Sodexo will offer a cash-only BBQ as well, for full program and menu information visit the USM SoM website. 

The USM Concert Band, directed by Dr. Jackie Townsend, is a wind and percussion ensemble open to any USM student, whether a music major or not, giving students an opportunity to expand their technical, intellectual, and musical horizons. 

World of Chinese Opera

The USM School of Music and Confucius Institute welcome performers trained by The National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, China's foremost institution on Chinese opera art as well as the partner institution of the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University, State University of New York. The visiting troupe of professional actors and musicians will perform Chinese opera at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center; the program will feature Beijing opera excerpts including movement and music, traditional Chinese instruments and lively Chinese folk songs.

Workshop #1 - Beijing Opera Workshop
A workshop to introduce the artistic characteristics of Beijing Opera, including mask art as well as performance and singing characteristics.

Workshop #2 - Chinese Bamboo Flute Workshop
A workshop introducing attendees to the charm and artistic characteristics of Chinese bamboo flute art.

11th Annual Northern New England Collegiate Symposium on Music Education
Corthell Concert Hall, Gorham Campus
Free for UMaine System music majors, $30-$45 range for others

Dr. André Thomas, conductor, composer, and author will be at USM to lead a workshop focused on choral music education for collegiate members of the National Association for Music Education, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the American Choral Directors Association. Thomas will share his career experience as well as advice for pre-service educators preparing to work with young singers.

$15 for adults, $10 for seniors and USM alumni, and $5 for students

The USM voice faculty and guests intend to serve you up a variety of music at the next Faculty Concert Series, Friday, October 18 at 8:00 p.m., featuring USM’s Malinda Haslett, soprano, and guest artist Jonathan Boyd, tenor (San Francisco Opera, L'opera de Nice, Teatro Argentina). They will feature works from "Carmen," "La bohème," songs of Judy Garland, and more -- an operatic main course, with some musical theatre for dessert. Performers include Mary Bastoni, Ed Reichert, Scott Wheatley, Alexandra Dietrich, Jenna Guiggey, as well as Mary Letellier, guest.
