USM's Danielle Layton speaks to News Center Maine about school resource officers

Danielle Layton

University of Southern Maine (USM) Justice Policy Program research analyst Danielle Layton was quoted in a News Center Maine report on the number of school resource officers in Maine schools.

There are 67 school resource officers — police officers embedded on school campuses — in more than 90 schools in 51 towns across the state, Layton told reporter Chris Costa.

The Maine Department of Education is not required to keep these records, and neither does the National Association of School Resource Officers, she told the TV news station.

There has been a focus on school resource officers in the wake of school shootings across the country.

Layton said there is not much research about the effectiveness of having officers on school grounds at all times, though USM research shows kids who get arrested in high school are twice as likely to drop out — and many students say the presence of a school resource officer on campus makes them feel safe.
