USM’s Environmental Science and Policy department hosts 23rd annual Southern Maine Children’s Water Festival

PORTLAND -- The University of Southern Maine Environmental Science and Policy department hosts the 23rd annual Southern Maine Children’s Water Festival on Friday, May 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Sullivan Gym, 66 Falmouth St., on the Portland Campus.

Each May this free, day-long event welcomes nearly 700 4th, 5th and 6th-grade students and their teachers from Androscoggin, Cumberland, Franklin, Kennebec, Lincoln, Oxford, Sagadahoc, and York counties.

The festival includes presentations, hands-on exhibits, quiz contests and stage shows all with a water theme to educate students about water’s role as an animal habitat, meeting human needs, water quality protection, water conservation and more.

Coordinated by leading state and nonprofit environmental organizations in Maine, the aim of the event is to advance environmental literacy, develop career interest in science, technology, engineering, and math fields, provide teachers with resource materials and classroom activities, and promote partnerships and collaboration between teachers and resource professionals.
