USM's Patsy Thompson Leavitt, an assistant professor of nursing, was honored by the Maine Education Association and Portland's WCSH-TV as an 'Inspiring Educator.'
The TV item, which was also shown on Bangor's WLBZ-TV, highlighted Leavitt's award last fall of the 2016 Mary Cushman M.D. Award for Humanitarian Service. It was awarded for her work at the USM School of Nursing and as the volunteer executive director a free rural clinic. Fourteen years ago, she founded the Leavitt's Mill Free Health Center in Bar Mills-Buxton and works there as a nurse practitioner.
She treasures her work with students, she told the TV station.
"They ask questions," said said. "They push. They ask, 'Why?' And that's what I want them to do. That's what I encourage and demand."
