December 6

As the semester comes to a close so do many art exhibits on campus. See Macon Reed’s Eulogy for the Dyke Bar” in Portland through 12/7, Daniel Minter: OTHERED in Gorham through 12/9, and IXNOS at Glickman Library through 12/14.

Thursday evening is the Southern Maine Astronomers Open House, 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., at the Southworth Planetarium. Also, don’t forget Season of Light! See it see it this Sunday at  3:00 p.m., and ongoing all month.

The Department of Theatre opens "A Winter Idyll...with Spring in Sight" Thursday evening, 7:30 p.m., at Russell Hall on the Gorham Campus! Don’t miss this evening of dance and spoken word inspired by the winter solstice. With live and recorded music, the performance explores the magic of the winter months and the promise of the returning Spring. One weekend only!

This Friday evening at 6:00 p.m., help fund our budding musicians at the School of Music’s 28th Annual Scholarship Gala! Enjoy many terrific student and faculty performances, from jazz to classical music, while noshing on high-end hors d’oeuvres in Corthell Hall on the Gorham Campus.




Student eventIn Portland Friday night, invite friends and go join the Commuter Student Association for FREE roller skating at Happy Wheels Skate Center! Free for all USM students with USM ID, 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (331 Warren Avenue, Portland).

December 8 - 9

The School of Music performances continue over the weekend! On Saturday in Portland, 4:00 p.m., support the USM Chamber Singers at their Benefit Concert at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, proceeds will help fund their upcoming spring tour to Vietnam.

Later that evening in Gorham, USM voice faculty Malinda Haslett directs Opera Workshop: Shakespeare & Co: Songs, Sonnets, and Scenes, at 8:00 p.m. in Corthell Concert Hall.

On Monday, prep for holiday time with a workshop, Home for the Holidays: Taking Care of Your Healthy Self, at 12:00 Noon, in 403 Luther Bonney Hall, Portland Campus.

If you haven’t made it to a Green Zone Training yet, Wednesday is your chance! The two-hour training session with USM Veterans Services is from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in  203 Payson Smith, on the Portland Campus.

USM Free Store event

December 13

On Thursday and Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., start cleaning things out for a fresh new year! Students, staff, and faculty are invited to donate unused items to the USM Free Store on the Gorham Campus. Accepted donation items include: clothing, hangers, decorations, costumes, school supplies, books, games, kitchenware, and more.
