April 19

On Thursday, open to the public and jazz musicians of all ages, a free Jazz Residency with Visiting Artist, Graham Breedlove takes place 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Gorham, Room 212, Corthell Hall. Later that evening, at 8 p.m., see the artist in concert with the Portland Jazz Orchestra at One Longfellow Square in Portland. Check out all of the April School of Music events on their calendar!

Thursday evening, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on the Gorham Campus, see Marathon For Justice: Film Screening and Discussion, in Bailey 10. This 45-minute film explores three instances of communities seeking environmental justice, and the panel discussion to follow will explore these issues within Maine.

After the film, head over to Shrekfast at 9:00 p.m., in Lower Brooks, also on the Gorham Campus. Enjoy a Shrek-themed breakfast event with green tablecloths, green toppings for pancakes and waffles, candles and blue flowers, and a Shrek cutout to be won by raffle. Free with USM ID, $10 general admission.

Thinking Matters posterApril 20

Thinking Matters takes place all day and into the evening on Friday! The Honors Program features their annual event, a student research symposium showcasing innovative learning and creativity. Thinking Matters gives students meaningful opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts. This year new components to the day include: “Lightning Talks,” a "Walkout Teach-in," and a celebratory reception.  

The Annual Therapeutic Recreation Conference also takes place on Friday in Portland, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the Cohen Room in the Glickman Library. Maine's premier conference on Therapeutic Recreation, this is a unique chance to meet different leaders and practitioners, share perspectives and experiences, and build institutional capacity in designing and implementing therapeutic recreation.

Thursday evening, the USM Theater Department presents the Opening Night of “The Importance of Being Earnest,” on the Main Stage at Russell Hall. Oscar Wilde’s most brilliant tour de force, this superb satire will make you laugh out loud! The show runs through April 29, with both evening and matinee performances.

Girl 6 Beats posterApril 21

Support local artisans and the Southern Maine Huskies this Saturday at the 11th Annual Spring Craft Show at the Costello Sports Complex, on the Gorham Campus. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., over 120 local vendors will have their work for sale; proceeds from the show benefit the USM men's and women's soccer and field hockey teams!

Saturday evening, don’t miss the premiere of “Girl in Six Beats,” 8:00 p.m. at Corthell Concert Hall, on the Gorham Campus. Commissioned by Opera Maine and created in collaboration with The Telling Room, USM Opera Workshop students will perform the one-act chamber opera, featuring a libretto written by students of The Telling Room, and music composed by Dan Sonenberg, composer-in-residence at USM. A second performance will be  Sunday, April 22, 2:00 p.m. also at Corthell Concert Hall.

Bike Swap posterApril 22

Swing by the Great Maine Bike Swap Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the USM Sullivan Complex in Portland! Choose from hundreds of bikes in all price ranges and of all types including road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids and children’s bikes. Area bike shops will also be on site selling bike parts, accessories, helmets and more.

April 23

On Monday SPRING FLING begins, join Student Activities for a series of fun events to finish off the Spring 2018 semester. Kicking things off on Monday night, 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., toast up some s'mores at Make S'More Friends, at the Upton Hastings Volleyball Court in Gorham, free with USM ID.

 

April 24

Join fellow emerging leaders and professionals after work on Tuesday at this free USM Student & Alumni Happy Hour with PROPEL, 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., at Island Dog Brewing in South Portland. Each attendee will receive a token for their first beer free. Bring along a friend, and please RSVP!

April 25

Also a Spring Fling event, on Wednesday evening the Evasons - World's Foremost Mentalist Duo, will perform on the Gorham Campus at 8:00 p.m. at the Brooks Student Center. The Evasons are one of the very few couples who still travel around the globe to carry on the rare and incredible talent known as Second Sight. Since 1983 The Evasons have traveled to over 35 countries, performing at private parties and gala events. Network TV appearances include NBC, CBS, FOX, CW Network, Discovery Channel, and Netflix.

Save the date! Friday, April 27 is The First Annual USM Symposium on Aging, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Abromson Center on the Portland Campus. Register now, for an opportunity to learn more about aging and how it touches all of us in our personal and professional capacities.
