Dave’s professional and academic career spans over 35 years, and includes employment as a wilderness counselor for young people with behavioral/substance abuse issues, an outdoor recreation leader for people with disabilities, an advocate/researcher for the importance of play for children with disabilities and those who have experienced trauma, a wilderness/nature-based tour leader, recreation therapist and a faculty/researcher. In addition to his teaching role, Dave is helping to provide play opportunities for Haitian and Afghan children through the International Childhood Enrichment Program (ICEP –www.icepkidsplay.org ). Dave developed a certification program in sustainable tourism through the International Ecotourism Society (TIES – firstname.lastname@example.org ). As part of this new certification program, he leads USM international travel courses to Belize and Newfoundland (Seehttp://usm.maine.edu/international/travel ). Dave enjoys running, hiking/backpacking, seakayaking, bicycling, canoeing, skiing and world travel with his wife, Barbara Harvey.

Dave’s research focuses on community inclusion of play/recreation services for children with disabilities, recreation therapists’ professional competencies, university students’ cultural awareness through service-learning pedagogy, child’s play in war-torn/impoverished countries, and sustainable tourism. He primarily utilizes qualitative research methodology to give voice marginalized groups.
