USM Scholarships

Portland Press Herald Scholarship


This scholarship was established at the Maine Community Foundation (MCF) by the Portland Press Herald. In 2010, the University of Southern Maine (USM) was asked to choose the scholarship recipients and administer the program. 


An eligible recipient must be a high school graduate with a 2.5 GPA, Maine resident with demonstrated financial need, as determined by the FAFSA, and underrepresented either by being racially, or ethnically diverse or a first generation college student.

Award Amount

$1,000 - initial award which is renewable for up to 7 semesters. The renewal award may vary from the initial award.

How to Renew

Must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and full time enrollment.  Recipients may take a leave of absence for up to one year without defaulting on their scholarship.

Award amounts may vary each year and are subject to fund availability. As an NCAA Division III school, USM is prohibited from awarding scholarships based on athletic participation.

Every academically qualified student from New Hampshire and Vermont can attend USM for less than the cost of in-state tuition in their home states. Application deadline is April 1.
