Maine North Atlantic Institute at USM hosts University of Tromsø leaders

A local reception celebrating the growing educational and trade relationship between Maine and North Atlantic countries included representatives from the University of Tromsø in Norway. The school, the world’s northernmost, has signed a partnership agreement with the University of Southern Maine aimed at exchanges, research and ongoing collaboration.

The Maine Small Business Development Centers — though the University of Southern Maine — is a leader in helping small business owners surmount first-year obstacles. The state was just chosen by the Kaufman Foundation as number one in the county for start-up businesses after their first year.

MMG Insurance gives USM $50K to help a fast-growing Maine industry

University of Southern Maine’s President Glenn Cummings recently announced a $50,000 gift from Presque Isle-based MMG Insurance to support the University’s program in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI). Specifically, the gift will bolster the endowment for the MEMIC John T. Leonard Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance, which honors the legacy of retired MEMIC CEO John Leonard who was instrumental in establishing the RMI program at USM.

Kimberly Howrigan, 2019 Featured Graduate

Kimberly Howrigan of Fairfield, Vermont spent USM years creating an impressive resume as a scholar and an athlete. She will graduate with a bachelor's degree in business administration. She earned magna cum laude honors for her academics. She served as the captain of the women's basketball team and president of the USM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which earned national honors for efforts in the community, including working with athletes from the Maine Special Olympics.

Emerging leaders gather at USM for Hussey Leadership Institute

More than 200 emerging business leaders gathered recently at the University of Southern Maine’s Portland Campus for a day-long discussion of leadership, ethics and business. The event — the 2nd annual Hussey Leadership Institute — drew representatives from a variety of local businesses for discussions ranging from courage and entrepreneurship to influencing without authority and leading culture change.
