What is AmeriCorps?  |  AmeriCorps Programs  |  Opportunities  |  Learn More

AmeriCorps is a civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. Joining AmeriCorps is a great way to put your idealism into action and give back to the community! As an AmeriCorps member, you can help make the world a better place by helping children learn, protecting the environment, or bringing needed services to a low-income community.  There are a variety of opportunities in AmeriCorps for anyone who is willing to help those in need.

AmeriCorps also offers tangible benefits: Most AmeriCorps members receive student loan deferment, and training, and may receive a living allowance and limited health benefit options. After you complete your term of service, you will also receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to help pay for college, graduate school, or vocational training or to repay student loans.  AmeriCorps is also a great experience to put on your resume.

AmeriCorps' Three Distinct Programs: State and National, NCCC, and VISTA

AmeriCorps State and National - AmeriCorps State and National supports a wide range of local service programs that engage thousands of Americans in intensive community service each year. We provide grants to a network of local and national organizations and agencies committed to using national service to address critical community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.  Each of these organizations and agencies, in turn, uses their AmeriCorps funding to recruit, place, and supervise AmeriCorps members nationwide.

AmeriCorps NCCC - AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women age 18-24. Members are assigned to one of five campuses — Denver, CO; Sacramento, CA; Baltimore, MD; Vicksburg, MS; and Vinton, IA.

AmeriCorps VISTA - Today, more than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps VISTA taps the skills, talents and passion of more than 7,000 Americans annually to support community efforts to overcome poverty.  AmeriCorps VISTA is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 18 and older.  Members and Summer Associates receive a modest living allowance. Members who serve for a year also receive limited health benefit options, childcare, if needed, and other benefits. After successful completion of a term of service, members can choose to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend.

Community outreach and development requires social media know-how and skills to manage website content and circulate messaging. Knowledge of crowd-funding as a means of fundraising and promotion is desired. Planning events for both fundraising and community outreach is frequent, and having strong organizational skills is a must.
