As part of the celebration for National Engineers Week in Maine, the Maine Engineering Promotional Council sponsors the Engineering Expo, held alternately at the University of Maine at Orono and the University of Southern Maine. This year, USM hosted the 2019 Engineering Expo on Saturday, May 2nd, at the USM Costello Sports Complex on the Gorham campus, inviting hundreds of students, their families, and friends to the event.
The Expo hosted local businesses and organizations including Women in Transportation Seminar, American Society of Civil Engineers, Pratt & Whitney, IDEXX, and the Maine Society of Professional Engineers, to name a few. Many of USM's educational community partners also showed off their wares, including Mad Science, 4-H Science, Baxter Academy, UMaine Orono Engineering and of course our very own Departments of Engineering and Computer Science.
STEM Sisters participated to show off what origami-inspired engineering design looks like, introducing to visitors how shape and form can often times be more important than material choice in the strength of an object or structure, and how tesselations and complex folding patterns can simplify mechanical processes and improve reliability of motion.
More than just students, the expo saw teachers, other faculty members, parents, community members, and others who work in the engineering profession perused the sights and sounds that bring physics and math together in a fun-filled day buzzing with the possibility of students thinking about engineering in their future.
