Student Shannon Sockalexis figured people might feel uncomfortable with her story, bored with its history or merely walk on by. So the student artist -- acting on a suggestion by USM Art Gallery Director Carolyn Eyler -- made a comic strip. In seven panels, Sockalexis tells a tiny piece of the lies and lost resources that punctuate Penobscot history.
USM's Lorrayne Carroll introduced Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" for its Portland Ballet production at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center. Carroll, an associate professor of English at USM, spoke about the classic story before the performance. The dance was accompanied by a live orchestra, which was conducted by Professor Robert Lehman of the USM School of Music.
