The celebration — planned by students in a "Global Migration and the Refugee Experience" class — will include the Oath of Allegiance and the awarding of certificates of naturalization, the official proof of U.S. citizenship.

Maine native Kelly Clements, the United Nations' High Commissioner for Refugees, met with students and community members during a Feb. 17 discussion at USM's Glickman Library. Clements described the massive challenges created by an estimated worldwide population of 65 million refugees. The session was covered by the Portland Press Herald and Maine Public.
