In the season finale of "The USM Update" for the 2017-2018 academic year, USM President Glenn Cummings welcomes guests from some of the University's better-known departments, including the University's acclaimed Department of Linguistics and its Office of Sustainability. In addition, we feature three graduates who will take the stage at Commencement later this month. Check out the full show.
First, Cummings sits down with representatives from the University's nationally-accredited ASL/English Interpretation program, including Dr. Judy Shepard-Kegl, whose work with deaf Nicaraguan schoolchildren has earned global acclaim. We'll hear how USM is working with community partners to get students out, working and interpreting within the Deaf community ahead of graduation. Watch the segment.
Cummings also discusses sustainability initiatives at USM — where they stand and where they're going — with Chelsea Malacara, USM sustainability education and outreach coordinator. Plus, we hear how USM's student Eco-Reps are making change on and off campus each day. Check it out.
Finally, we end the show by speaking with three of USM's featured graduates who, like their own diverse backgrounds, represent the best of the University of Southern Maine: Bryan Waring, who will graduate with a bachelor of music in music composition; Melissa Cunningham, who will graduate with a bachelor of science in nursing; and Jordan O'Hearn, who will receive his master's in leadership studies. Watch now.
"The USM Update" is a monthly, half-hour program covering all things USM. New episodes air on the first Monday of each month at 8:30 p.m. on the Portland-based Portland Media Center (formerly CTN) on channel 5, and also statewide on 14 community stations in Southern, Central and Coastal Maine — a range of stations covering 50 communities with a combined population of more than 463,000 people.
