Field Work Education Overview

Office of Field Education

USM School of Social Work Office of Field Education presents BSW and MSW students with opportunities to become a part of the professional social work community. During a yearlong field practicum, supervised by a social worker, you will integrate classroom learning and theories into practice directly with clients in agencies, organizations, communities, and neighborhoods and developing social work skills and professional identity.  It will also allow you to test your interest in working with a particular client population, as well as fostering a stronger personal commitment to the social work profession, its ethics, values, and ideals.

The SSW Office of Field Education is affiliated with over 250 fieldwork sites primarily in the Portland and Greater Portland areas, Mid-Coast, Central, Southern, and Western Maine regions with professional social workers who will mentor and help prepare you for a career in the social work field and uniquely qualified to make a difference.

Social work students work closely with Office of Field Education staff to identify placement sites appropriate to curriculum objectives, learning goals and individual interests.
