School of Social Work

MSW Low Residency Program

The School of Social Work is pleased to announce the launch of their Master's degree as a part-time, low-residency online program option. Starting mid-May 2019, students wishing to pursue this low-residency online Master's degree option may take 2-3 courses per semester (summer, fall and spring), completing the program in 3 years. Our current pilot cohort will be graduating in May 2022. The admission process for the next low residency cohort is TBD.

The courses take place primarily online with 2-3 face-to-face Friday meetings per semester on USM’s Portland campus.

The program curriculum is identical to the regular MSW program and is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The only difference between the two options is the program pace and the delivery format for the content, as described above.

The program is being led by USM School of Social Work MSW Coordinator & Assistant Professor Dorothea Ivey, Ph.D. If there are any questions, please be in touch with Dr. Dorothea Ivey at
