The Portland & Gorham Wellness Resource Centers (The Wells) at USM are resource centers dedicated to helping members of the USM community develop and increase their awareness of many aspects of wellness. Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. Wellness is a holistic concept involving financial, sexual, physical, spiritual, cultural, emotional, intellectual, social and environmental dimensions.
Physical- Maintaining a healthy quality of life while avoiding destructive habits.
Emotional- Ability to manage and express emotions, understand ourselves and cope with the challenges life can bring.
Cultural- Acceptance of individuals different from ourselves and appreciation of other cultures.
Spiritual- Having a positive perception of meaning and purpose in life and being grounded in your beliefs.
Intellectual- Intellectual: Ability to open our minds to new ideas, the desire to learn concepts and improve skills
Financial- Ability to manage and balance finances, with the understanding of the importance of sustaining ourselves financially, in the short and long term.
Sexual- Self- acceptance and entering into responsible, safe and healthy physical and emotional relationships.
Environmental- Caring for and about the natural resources that sustain us.
Social- Developing relationships which incorporate acceptance and affiliation, trust, loyalty and respect.
