TRIO Programs at USM

TRIO SSS Activities & Programs

TRIO Student Support Services offers sections of the 1-credit COR 101: Co-Curricular Learning Lab. In TRIO sections of this course, students are paired with a peer mentor.  Together, each student and mentor will work on assessing strengths and needs, developing and tracking goals, and developing resources for future use.  This course is highly individualized and supports parts of the college experience that go beyond academics.

TRIO SSS Ambassadors

TRIO Ambassadors are University of Southern Maine student staff members who work directly with TRIO Student Support Services students to engage them in community and support their academic and personal success. TRIO Ambassadors will gain experience in leadership, academic and educational policies and resources on campus. The TRIO Ambassador ideally has strong communication and organizational skills, works well in a team setting, and enjoys helping others. TRIO Ambassadors who qualify for federal work-study funds will be given preference.

TRIO SSS Summer Scholars Program

The TRIO Summer Scholars Program is offered by TRIO Student Support Services at USM to ensure the success of newly admitted USM students.  It includes opportunities to become familiar with USM’s campuses and resources, prepare for the start of classes, and connect with new classmates.  After the program, TRIO Student Support Services will provide ongoing college coaching and academic support throughout your time at USM, working closely with you to ensure your successful college graduation.

First Gen Floor

New for fall 2020 and slated to be housed in Upton Hastings Hall, the First-Generation Student Transition Living Learning Community (LLC) is a partnership between Residential Life, TRIO, and the Promise Scholarship Program, offering three sections of COR 101 for incoming students who are the first in their family to go to college. This new LLC will strive to provide students with the resources, support, and tools needed to make the most out of their first semester at USM. Small classes with student mentors provide students in the First-Generation Student Experience LLC with a close-knit community in which they can explore how to best access and utilize university resources, learn the ins and outs of college, and develop strong relationships with peers and mentors.

Community Building and Leadership Events

TRIO Student Support Services offers students the opportunity to participate in community building and leadership events throughout the year. Some of these events include TRIO Open Houses, pumpkin carving, a FAFSA night, gingerbread house decorating (pictured), paint day, a pizza party, and MEEOA and Gear Up Advocacy Day at the State Capital (pictured). We encourage TRIO students to suggest new events for the community.
