Juarez receives New England Educational Opportunity Association Rising Star Award
TRIO Upward Bound at the University of Southern Maine has announced that Doris Juarez is the recipient of the New England Educational Opportunity Association (NEOA) Rising Star Award. Juarez, an Upward Bound alumna from Deering High School in Portland, Maine, was recognized at the New England Educational Opportunity Association’s Annual Conference on Thursday, April 8, 2021.
TRIO doubles federal funding with new grant to help STEM students
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded more than $2.6 million to USM’s TRIO program to augment its work with students who have a low income, a disability or are the first in their families to attend college. The just-announced funding — arriving in two, five-year grants — expands TRIO advising to target students pursuing fields in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The new funding, $1.3 million, allows TRIO to advise 120 STEM students.
USM receives $500k “Veterans Day Gift” to establish Boulos Veterans Promise Completion Scholarship
The new Boulos Veterans Promise Completion Scholarship Fund will provide critical financial support to help veterans complete a degree at USM. It will also help fund a graduate assistantship for a veteran to work with the Promise Scholarship program in supplementing career and other support services provided by USM’s Office of Veterans Services.

The funding will serve Maine veterans statewide, providing them with resources and support necessary to succeed in postsecondary education.
Veterans Upward Bound program at USM featured on "207"
WCSH6 news show "207" featured the Veterans Upward Bound program located at University of Southern Maine. The only such program in Maine, provides veterans with the training and assistance to transition from the military (whether recent or past service) into obtaining a college degree at the institution of their choice.
