Award Named for Founding Director of Women and Gender Studies

NANCY GISH, professor of English and founding Director of the USM Women and Gender Studies Program, was recognized by her peers on the Women and Gender Studies Council with an award named in her honor. The Nancy K. Gish Award for Excellence in Feminist Social, Intellectual, Political, or Cultural Practice was dedicated as such for Gish's work as a sustaining force of feminist academics and engagement on campus, in the community, and in the world. The award's creation was announced at the annual Women and Gender Studies Awards Reception on April 12, 2013. WGS Council member, Lorrayne Carroll, professor of English and former student of Ms. Gish's, introduced the award and Director of Women and Gender Studies, Wendy Chapkis presented Ms. Gish with a bouquet of flowers for her continued and longstanding contributions to USM Women and Gender Studies. GABRIEL DEMAINE, USM coordinator for diversity and inclusivity programming received the inaugural award.
