The Department of History & Political Science has work-study opportunities in our Portland and Gorham offices for students who have federal work-study funds. Work Study Positions may be available in the following areas:
Intern III
Associates will be responsible for providing diverse office support to the Administrative Assistant and the department in general, including answering telephones, word processing, copying, responding to student and faculty questions and covering office hours when needed. Intermediate Macintosh, Power Point and Excel skills will be necessary for computer experience. Frequent design of flyers promoting department events may be required. The associate will develop an understanding and working knowledge of all aspects of the department and USM resources, procedures and policies.
Computer Consultant IV
The Computer Consultant will work primarily with the Administrative Assistant to coordinate the updating of information on the department web sites, and further development of the web site according to program needs and growth. The most important part of this job is that the candidate will need a working knowledge in social networking (FaceBook, Twitter, YouTube, blogging, etc.) and be the voice of the department’s on line presence. We are open to new ideas in marketing our department to develop more visibility and membership. Candidate needs to be creative, willing to experiment and deal with uncertainty, needs good writing/editing, and verbal communication skills. As a consultant, it will be an essential quality to work as part of a team and maintain composure under pressure. When the Administrative Assistant is out of the office the person in this position will help in the day to day performance of assigned duties and cover office hours when needed.

The course is a great opportunity for USM students and for the general public to get direct access to the European Union institutions in Brussels and other international bodies in The Hague, such as the International Court of Justice for instance, as the best way to understand the complexity of international organizations. Participants will also be able to visit the main NATO headquarters in Brussels and attend presentations by NATO officials on current topics in the news with regards to foreign and military policy. Students will acquire a detailed knowledge of how the many bodies of the EU work together and how the EU itself has developed over time
