PLA CLEP Examinations
CLEP EXAMINATIONS are standardized tests
These tests cover material taught in courses that most students take as basic foundations for their college degrees. USM faculty have reviewed these exams and have recommended credit and passing scores for these exams.
USM is a testing site open to the general public, which means registration is not restricted to only USM students. Be sure to check with your home institution to learn their minimum cut-off scores and course equivalents.
Not sure which exam to take? Review the CLEP Website for more information about each of the available exams.

Registering for a CLEP exam
Before registering, keep a couple of things in mind:
Check in with your home institution before taking any exam, but particularly before taking a college writing exam. PLA at USM offers only the College Composition Modular, which is a 90-minute multiple choice exam. USM does not offer the essay format of this exam and the previous CLEP English Composition has been discontinued. While College Composition Modular is the correct test for students seeking academic credit for college writing (ENG 100 CW) at USM, it might not be the right test for your school.
Active Duty Military - You test for free! Your CLEP registration is free as long as you meet these criteria.
You’ll be able to come into the USM Testing Center (Luther Bonney, Room 240) after a couple of quick registration steps:
Create an account on the CLEP website and purchase the exam(s) you intend to take. Keep in mind that we do not allow students to take more than two exams in a single testing session.
Complete the registration form. This form is emailed directly to our Testing Associate, Vicki Meserve (email@example.com) After receiving your form, Vicki will contact you by email or phone to set up a time for you to come in for your test.
