Tips for Employers!

A job fair is a great opportunity to create connections with USM students and community! We want to help you make the most of your day with a few helpful tips.

  • Arrive with plenty of time to unload, park, and set up your table. The space opens at 9am. Get to campus as close to that as you can.
  • Bring swag! Students love free stuff (don’t we all?!) and something interesting on the table can draw their attention and spark a conversation. Think about how to make your table interactive with a game, challenge, or display students can engage with.
  • Be ready with a way to collect students’ names and email so you can follow up with them.
  • Engaging with students and community members that approach your table. Stay off your phone, make eye contact, say “hello”. A simple greeting can break the ice for a nervous student.
  • Having your table staffed at all times. Consider bringing more than one representative with you to the event. This way, both of you get a chance for a lunch break but don’t leave the table unattended.
  • Being prepared to talk to all students, no matter their major or year. Talk to first and second-year students about internship opportunities, skills to build, classes to consider to prepare. All of our students are thinking ahead for their future; be ready to help them!
  • Bringing plenty of business cards and materials for people to take away. That way they won’t forget your contact information to follow up after the event.
  • Follow up with students you met during the event. Maintain that connection with students you want to see in your talent pipeline.
  • Fill out your Job and Internship Fair Feedback survey. Your feedback will help us continually improve the event!
