Aaron Henry is a saxophonist, woodwindist, producer, and composer, specializing in modern and contemporary improvisation. He has performed at venues from Lincoln Center, The Blue Note, and Birdland to The North Sea and Istanbul Jazz Festivals. He has recorded with artists including Dave Liebman, Miguel Zenon, Anat Cohen, Antonio Sanchez, Matthew Stevens, Esperanza Spalding, and Christian Scott and is a member of Grammy-nominated Mehmet Ali Sanlikol’s large ensemble What’sNext?, who’s recent album Turkish Hipster has received rave reviews and has been spotlighted on NPR. He has collaborated with Louis Cato (Jon Batiste and Stay Human of The Tonight Show) and Maine-bred artists Ryan Blotnick, Ross Gallagher, Adam Agati, Lyle Divinsky, Nick Falk, and Anna Lombard.
Aaron received his Master’s Degree in Studio Composition from SUNY Purchase College, where he studied with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Du Yun, tech-wizard Jakub Ciupinski, and world-renown producer/engineer Peter Denenberg (Spin Doctors, Willie Nelson). He graduated from The Berklee College of Music with a degree in saxophone performance, where he received the Charlie Parker Award for Woodwind Excellence and performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival as a member of the Berklee Monterey Quartet led by guitarist Bryan Baker. He studied with Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Hal Crook, Dino Govoni, Shannon Leclaire and Frank Tiberi, and spent time prior at the University of Redlands, CA, studying classical saxophone and woodwind doubling, winning honorable mention in the Redlands Concerto Competition, and placing 2nd in the Fine Arts Club of Pasadena’s Concerto Competition.
Aaron performs extensively around Maine, New England, and the NYC area, with the occasional tour and appearance at festivals from Sweden to Korea. He is the Director of Bands and Instrumental Music at Yarmouth High School (ME), is a jazz faculty member of saxophone at the New England Music Camp, and is heavily involved in the MMEA All-State, Jazz All-State, and District Festivals.
