As part of the English 1 background in preparation for reading the The Odyssey, Ms. Bailey (mentor teacher) and Mr. Austin Sims (ETEP intern) came to class in costume as Calliope and Tiresias, respectively. Joining them were 35 Westbrook freshmen dressed in togas with scrolls and symbols in hand, ready to teach the class about their chosen Greek gods. Dionysus and Athena had choice words for one another while Demeter overflowed with pride seeing her little girl Persephone take the stage, pomegranate held aloft. Also included in this unit so far was an introduction to polytheism, mapping the Hero’s journey, and a background on the Trojan War courtesy of Homer’s The Iliad. Now…onward to Ithaca!
