The New England Association for Teachers of English (NEATE) is holding its annual conference, “Intellectual Freedom: Reclaiming Voice, Choice, & Representation” at Wachusett High School in Holden, Mass on Saturday, October 21st from 7:30 am until 3:30 pm.
NEATE is an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), an organization for literacy educators. Our keynote will be presented by Jennifer DeLeon, author of Borderless and White Space: Essays on Culture, Race, and Writing. As an added bonus, Dr. Laura Jiménez, Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Wheelock University will present “Centering Banned Books in the ELA Curriculum” with colleagues Taryn Brosnan, Harmony Grove, Elizabeth Harvey, Amanda Mirabella, and Christine Morrill.
Dr. Mindy Butler, Assistant Professor of Literacy Education from the Department of Literacy, Language, and Culture, has been a member of NCTE for over 20 years, is President-Elect of NEATE and active on the Executive Board. Mindy will present a conference session entitled “Graphic Novel Book Clubs and the Students’ Right to Read.”
