Dr. Adam Schmitt (Teacher Education) and Dr. Ashley Towle (History) recently published the chapter “Representations of Reconstruction: Social Transformations and Textbook Portrayals of the Past” in the edited volume Teaching Emancipation and Reconstruction, 1861-1876. The chapter explores how the period of Reconstruction has been represented in textbooks over the past 150 years and includes an inquiry-based lesson for teachers to use with secondary social studies students.
