Professor Shedletsky Publishes in International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Professor of Communication Lenny Shedletsky has published his work Pedagogy of Dialogic Communication: Becoming Aware of Our Unconscious Beliefs in The International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Scholars have generally agreed that critical reflection is the central goal of education (Chomsky, 2012; Dewey, 1933; Freire, 2005; Mezirow, 1997; van Gelder, 205; van Gelder, 206). But unconscious beliefs and after-the-fact reasons impede critical reflection. Even beliefs about ourselves can be hidden from awareness and therefore hidden from deliberation. This paper explores how we can facilitate critical thinking in students’ educational experiences. It ties together dialogic communication, conscious and unconscious beliefs, reading, writing, emotions, discussion, the value of student exploration, and the teacher’s understanding of how these connect to critical reflection. It suggests that teachers can facilitate transformative learning.
