Description
The Honors Leadership Development Scholarship provides an opportunity for enrolled USM Honors Students to expand their horizons by developing a leadership mentality and the skills necessary to function as a positive force of change in their communities.
We strive to see our scholars inject energy, passion, and drive into their leadership style and the causes they care about. Our scholars develop optimism for the future and the confidence to share credit generously. They learn how to cultivate personal motivation for collaborating, and how to navigate complex situations. We support our scholars in their endeavors to build relationships at USM and within our communities.
Honors Leadership Development scholars are expected to engage in 25 service hours per semester. Recipients of the scholarship may fulfill this requirement in the following ways:
- Create, participate in, and/or oversee community service activities
- Enhance the quality of Honors Program offerings and experiences
- Engage with USM student organizations (e.g. serving on the Honors Council)
- Mentor students as a peer leader or tutor
As a general rule, we expect students to participate in activities which cultivate their leadership skills, and we strongly encourage students to participate in projects of substantive community engagement. This community work is intended to encourage students to develop their leadership and interpersonal skills, in particular: empathy, patience, tenacity, and coalition building.
Each semester, recipients are required to provide a complete report, documenting and reflecting on the outcomes of each service activity as it relates to their personal and community growth.
