Learning integrative research abroad
This summer, faculty from the Muskie School's Geography-Anthropology program, the School of Social Work, and our Department of Art led students on a field trip through south Greenland. The trip was a culmination of a two-year project examining the impacts of ecological change on people in both Greenland and Maine. Students visited local communities, trained in cross-disciplinary research methods, and gained a renewed passion for their education.
Marwo Sougue wants to make the world a better place. Sougue, a second-year nursing student, recently accepted the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award. After noticing the struggles of her peers — homelessness, language barriers, financial obstacles to higher education, and more — Sougue dedicated herself to helping them succeed. Her work as a peer mentor upholds Lewis’ legacy of community action and highlights her commitment to others.

Symposium Aims to Reduce Barriers for Adult Students
The message is simple: When instructors meet the needs of adult students, all students benefit. USM’s annual Summer Academy of Adult Learning and Teaching (SAALT) symposium is geared toward improving teaching for adult students.

We’re excited to connect with you!

Suzi Osher School of Music, Jonas Rimkunas stood in the spot where Benny Goodman ushered in swing music, where George Gershwin debuted works and where nearly every popular performer since — from Frank Sinatra and The Beatles to Luciano Pavarotti and Lady Gaga — have performed.
Reading Workshop is a Real Page-Turner for Elementary to Grad Students
Tackling your summer book list in a college classroom rather than on a beach probably isn’t the first choice for most kids. Sympathetic teachers are doing their best to make those summer reading lessons as fun as they are educational.
