The Don Nicoll Memorial Lecture Series Inaugural Event
Public Service in Challenging Times
In today’s increasingly complex world, what is public service? What is its role and value in Maine? When divisiveness dominates the headlines, how are communities meeting the moment to address shared challenges?
Join us at the USM Muskie School of Public Service Don Nicoll Memorial Lecture Series for our inaugural panel of Maine community leaders, who will address these questions and share their insights in the context of their work to end homelessness in Maine.
Dr. Richard Maiman will provide an introduction to Don and his life’s work. Panelists Terry Sutton is the board president of Preble Street and Charles ‘Wick’ Johnson is the chair of Augusta Homelessness Task Force. They have both dedicated much of their careers to public service and community building in Maine. Jennifer Hutchins will moderate the discussion. Jennifer is Executive Director of the Maine Association of Nonprofits, the state’s leading organization for Maine’s charitable nonprofit sector with more than 1,200 members from all 16 counties.
This series is in honor of Don Nicoll, a long-time advisor to Maine state government and other public institutions, including the University of Maine System and former U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie. Don also served both as Chair and member of the Muskie School Board of Visitors.
