Geometry in Motion – Lived Experience as a Mathematical Resource
Christopher Austin, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, specializes in Math Education. In this session we will spend time analyzing and discussing tasks from elementary grades geometry, in order to get a sense of task features that children may find helpful for bringing in their intuitive ideas about geometric concepts. I will draw a few parallels (pun intended) to a well-known framework for arithmetic story problems, which I believe can serve as a useful guide for rethinking how children are introduced to formal geometric concepts.
We will meet in 241 Luther Bonney Hall.
