Looking Back at the Maine Gay Symposiums: 25 Years of Community Conversations

Join Steve Bull, one of the original founders of the Symposium, for a conversation about the 25 year history of the Maine Gay Symposium. Panelists, and participants, can talk about their experiences at Symposiums over the years, and ask questions. All are welcome!

The first Maine Gay Symposium was created by the Wilde-Stein Club, the first queer student group in Maine, and was held at the University of Maine in Orono, ME in April 1974. Over the years the Symposium was hosted at various locations all over Maine including Portland, Bangor, and Presque Isle. It occurred annually until 1999.

The event will also mark the opening of the exhibit about the history and importance of the symposiums called, The Maine Gay Symposium: The spark that started Queer Liberation in Maine, on the 6th floor of Glickman Library. This exhibit will run from Oct. 19, 2023 – Dec. 31, 2023.
