The Franco-American Collection at the University of Southern Maine invites you to join us at 51 Westminster St. in Lewiston on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at 6:30 pm for a viewing of the documentary Une histoire sur le goût de la langue, with discussion to follow. There is no fee for our programs, which are made possible by the Québec Delegation in Boston and by TV5MONDE. Thank you also to Hélène Choquette, the writer and director of the film for licensing rights.

A true ode to the French language with its many accents in Quebec (Canada), “Une histoire sur le goût de la langue” traces its unusual trajectory from the Conquest of 1759 to the present day. In addition to historians, linguists and other language enthusiasts, personalities recount pivotal events as they experienced them. A historical documentary, engaging and uncomplicated, on the linguistic journey of a people once subjugated to the British Crown and today more than ever weakened by the hegemony of the English language. This movie will be shown in French with English subtitles.
