Frequently Asked Questions
New to the job fair world? Not sure these events are right for you? We get a lot of questions from a lot of students, and we are here to help! Our Job & Internship Fair is for everyone. And we mean everyone! Check out our list of FAQ’s by year because everyone from first years to graduating seniors, even grad students, should be stopping by these events.
You might think these events are for juniors and seniors who are actively job hunting – but attending as a first-year student can actually give you a huge advantage! Here’s why:
- Explore your options around internships.
- Learn what employers are looking for to build your resume
- Build your confidence and your network
Make sure you have a resume and an answer to the question “Tell me about yourself”. You don’t need to know what your future career will be just yet, but you should know what you like and don’t like.
After the fair, start building your LinkedIn and connect with the recruiters and companies you met at the fair.
You finished your first year of college. Time to get serious. This is the time to scout out internships. Next year and next summer are prime internship time for you, so make those connections now.
- Identify the organizations you would like to get involved with. Learn more about their internship program so you can ask questions.
- Get your resume in people’s hands before you apply. Having a face to put with a name can be helpful.
- Come with an elevator pitch. If you don’t know what that is, make an appointment with the Career Hub!
Bring lots of copies of your resume with you to the fair. Be ready to talk about your goals for a future internship or job. You need to have some ideas about what you are looking for.
Be ready to put yourself out there! Now is the time to start networking and the fair is a great place to do that. Bring a friendly attitude, strong eye contact, and your best active listening. Maybe even take some notes. You’ll meet a lot of people and you want to make reference to the conversation when you connect with them after the fair on LinkedIn.
As a third-year student, you are at a key point in your college journey – and the Job & Internship Fair is the best way to take that next step toward your future! Here’s why:
- This is prime time for making good impressions. Stand out on your future application by interacting with the employers. Put a face to the name on that resume!
- Build your confidence and your network. Think of this as an introduction to your future interviews. Be ready to answer their questions, even if it is much more quickly. What are your goals? What are you looking for in a future internship/employer?
- Dress the part. You don’t need a suit and tie. A good piece of advice is dress how you want to be perceived.
Bring as many copies of your resume as you can. Hand them out to everyone who will take them! Meet as many people as you can because you never know what that connection may lead to. Follow up with recruiters on LinkedIn. If someone suggests connecting on email, don’t forget to initiate that contact! They will be impressed that you did.
Graduation is right around the corner and the Job & Internship Fair is your chance to turn your college experience into your next step. Here’s how:
- Connect directly with employers hiring our graduates. Put a face to that resume and application you may have already sent!
- Showcase your experience and skills while practicing your pitch to employers.
- Learn about career paths and opportunities you haven’t considered yet. Ask questions about job postings you’ve seen to get a sense of fit.
- Expand your network! 80% of jobs are found through networking.
Come to the Career Hub to practice your elevator pitch, review your resume, whatever you need to get ready. Job & Internship Fairs can be an overwhelming experience, with a lot of people and a lot to take in. Let the Career Hub help you make a plan!
Figure out who your priority employers are. When you get there, find them on the map and make sure you have allotted time to see them. Bring your resume, business cards (if you have them), and a genuine interest in and knowledge about those employers.
Graduate students are in the unique position of often knowing exactly what they want to do with their degrees. Unlike undergrads, they were very intentional about choosing this particular grad program, so the question of “what do you want do with this degree?” is pretty easy! Things to consider:
- The job fair is made for brief introductions and hopefully opportunities to follow-up with recruiters and employers. Make note of who you talk to and what you may have talked about. Referencing the conversation when you follow up will make it more personal. Be prepared to make the rounds.
- Bring a resume but know that a CV may be required for things in the future as well. Academic positions will need a CV but most jobs don’t, so this is a time for a well-constructed resume.
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Approach a table you may not have considered. You never know what valuable connections you may make!
