Welcome to the Department of Psychology at USM!
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior, a broad field that encompasses a variety of sub-disciplines: neurophysiology (brain sciences), cognition (information processing), perceptual processes, learning, social psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, clinical psychology, as well as key cultural aspects of psychology. Psychology majors also master foundations of research methods and statistical analysis.
The Department of Psychology at USM offers a BA degree within the College of Science, Technology, and Health that can be accomplished in 4 years with full-time study. We also offer a minor in psychology for students in other majors. Our focus is on educating students on the fundamentals of scientific theories and research methods within the field and preparing them for graduate-level studies and professions where they can utilize the wide array of skills and knowledge that the degree confers: the ability to systematically analyze problems, use critical thinking to evaluate information, and understand human social dynamics and the ways we learn and process information.
BA in Psychology: Program Student Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge of Psychology
Students will be able to describe key concepts, principles, and overarching themes in psychology; develop a working knowledge of psychology’s content domains; and describe applications of psychology.
2. Scientific Inquiry & Critical Thinking
Students will be able to use scientific reasoning to interpret psychological phenomena; demonstrate psychology information literacy; engage in innovative and integrative thinking and problem-solving; interpret, design, and conduct basic psychological research; and incorporate sociocultural factors in scientific inquiry.
3. Ethical & Social Responsibility in a Diverse World
Students will be able to apply ethical standards to evaluate psychological science and practice; build and enhance interpersonal relationships; and adopt values that build community at local, national, and global levels.
4. Communication
Students will be able to demonstrate effective writing for different purposes; exhibit effective presentation skills for different purposes, and interact effectively with others.
