I have been described as an adult learning geek, a person who can clear a room with discussions about how adults learn, and one who is passionate about the endless opportunities to help adults learn. I consider myself a quintessential lifelong learner, both formally and informally.

In 2012, I completed a Doctorate of Education (EdD) from Nova Southeastern University; concentrating on adult learning and organizational leadership. I have a Master’s degree in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Southern Maine, BS in Resource Management from Syracuse University & SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), and an AAS in Forest Technology from SUNY College of ESF, NY State Ranger School.

At the University of Southern Maine, I primarily teach HRD 631, The Adult Learner, and EDU 600, Research Methods and Techniques. My over forty-year career has included positions as the Natural Science Educator with Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF, University of New Hampshire Extension Educator, Maine Audubon education outreach coordinator, Manufacturing and Training Manager with Stanley Tools and Cooper Industries, and owner/President of Kevin D. Doran, Inc., a conservation education and environmental consulting firm.

In addition to my higher education teaching at USM, I have conducted numerous train-the-trainers, “How Adults Learn” workshops throughout the country. These workshops have been for hospital staffs (mostly RN’s), natural resource trainers, state agencies, university professors and staff, as well as for corporate trainers. I absolutely love teaching and consider it my life’s calling.

Personally, I have been married to my best friend (Lauren) since 1978, father of three wonderful children (actually adults now), and grandfather to five bundles of sunshine. I enjoy reading, movies, music, building things, anything outside – golf, kayaking, running, swimming, the beach, more… I am extremely blessed with a full and exciting life.
