Ross Hickey is the Assistant Provost for Research Integrity at the University of Southern Maine (USM). Ross is coordinating USM’s work in the New England Ocean Cluster (NEOCH) and is the Director of the Maine Regulatory Ethics and Training Center (MeRTEC) at USM. He is an attorney and a member of the Maine Bar and an at large member of the Grievance Commission. He has built a nationally recognized research compliance office that serves not only USM but institutions throughout the State of Maine. Ross is contacted regularly to provide technical assistance to other local institutions on regulatory compliance matters. The Research Integrity Symposium hosted by Ross attracts attendees from all over the country to our metro region to learn about regulatory and ethical considerations in research. He co-sponsors the Three I’s Biosecurity and Research Integrity Conference as well. Nationally, he co-chairs the Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Council for PRIM&R.

In the Social and Behavioral Sciences, Ross developed and teaches the undergraduate Regulatory Ethics Certificate and Minor as well as Leadership courses at USM. He helped to develop and teaches in the compliance certificate program at Maine Law and also teaches at Maine Law as an adjunct. He is active in student exchange and research collaboration with universities in the North Atlantic, such as Iceland and Norway, and is co-chair of the Economy and Law subcommittee for the Maine North Atlantic Institute. The international internships within the MeRTEC cultivate exposure for USM students to the advanced applied ocean technologies and methods being used in Scandinavian countries. He sits on the World Affairs Council for Maine.
