Research Interests

He has published and presented papers in the areas of child welfare, social work administration, social work education, and social forecasting. He has also been the
recipient of a number of federal, state and Foundation grants. In 1986 he was the recipient of a Fulbright award and was in residency in Italy.

Dr. Faherty teaches in the areas of Introduction to Social Welfare, Social Work Research and Statistics. His formal education includes a BA and Graduate Certificate from St. Joseph’s College and Seminary (1960, 1964), an MSW from Fordham University (1970), a DSW from the University of Utah (1976), and an MBA from the International Management Institute of the University of Geneva, Switzerland (1984). Prior to coming to the University of Southern Maine in 1988, Dr. Faherty taught at the University of Missouri – Columbia and at the University of Northern Iowa.

Selected Publications

His current research is directed toward social welfare history, information technology, research methodology and online teaching. Dr. Faherty recently published
Compassionate Statistics: Applied Quantitative Analysis for Social Service (Sage, 2008). A companion volume, Wordcraft: Applied Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA). Tools
for Public and Voluntary Social Services (Sage 2010) is scheduled for release in December 2009. His latest multi-media book proposal, tentatively titled Chronicles of
Social Welfare History: History Re-imagined as News, is currently under consideration for acceptance by Sage Publications.
