Dr. Casey Schmidt holds a Ph.D. and M.M. in music education from Northwestern University and a BM in music education and saxophone performance from Lawrence University. Prior to his appointment at the University of Southern Maine, Casey served on the music education faculty at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music for two years. In addition to his higher education teaching experience, Casey has taught instrumental music and music creativity classes in Illinois and Wisconsin public schools for over a decade. Casey’s research interests include music teacher education, the modes and processes music educators use to self-reflect, assess, and modulate their practice; the infusion of composition and improvisation in performance ensemble curricula; and the effects of collective music-making experiences on musical and social development. He has presented research at state, national, and international conferences. His work is published in the Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education, the Music Educators JournalResearch Studies in Music Education, and Psychology of Music.
