Dr. Stephen Kirsch has been a guest lecturer at the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine for the last few years. His offered courses have been electives under the category of Special Topics in Public Health and focus on Substance Use Disorders and Global Health.

He began his undergraduate study at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, followed by medical school at the Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. Dr. Kirsch relocated to Maine for training at the Maine Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program and has resided there since. In May of 2018, he graduated from the USM MPH program and has continued to contribute to public health education.

For over 30 years, Dr. Kirsch has practiced primary care medicine in the greater Portland area. During his clinical practice, he took short trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to provide medical care. He is currently employed as a Medical Consultant at Unum Insurance Company in the long-term disability benefits division.

Additionally, Dr. Kirsch has provided clinical care by treating individuals with Opioid Use Disorder at Groups: Recover Together. This organization operates in about 10 states and has several offices throughout Maine, offering Medication for Opioid Use Disorder and operating as one of the larger Opioid Health Homes for the MaineCare program.

His vocational activities have also included teaching primary care medicine at the Maine Medical Center Family Practice Residency program and volunteering at the Portland Community Free Clinic.

Dr. Kirsch, along with his wife, resides in Scarborough, Maine, where they raised their three daughters. His hobbies include walking his two dogs, cycling, gardening, baking, traveling, and beekeeping.
