Alexandra Dietrich, originally from Freeport, Maine, is known throughout New England for her work as a mezzo-soprano praised for singing with “passion and understanding”, music educator, arts advocate, and as a stage director. She is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor’s in Music Performance and attended the Longy School of Music for her Graduate Performance degree in Opera.

Ms. Dietrich has performed with many New England opera companies, choirs, and orchestras including Odyssey Opera, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, OperaHub, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and MetroWest Opera where her recent performance as Jo March in Adamo’s “Little Women” was hailed as “large of personality with an instrument to match”, possessed “polish and star power”, and was awarded the ArtsImpulse Award for Best Female Performer in an Opera for her portrayal. Favorite roles to date include Anita in “West Side Story” with Asheville Lyric Opera, Jade Boucher in the New England premiere of “Dead Man Walking” with Boston Opera Collaborative, Carmen in NEMPAC Opera’s “Carmen”, and as Zita in “Gianni Schicchi” with the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra, where her performance was toasted as “deliciously bitchy” (Portland Phoenix). As a soloist, she has sung with the Portland Symphony Pops, the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlemagne Orchestra of Belgium, the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, the Longy Chamber Orchestra, and the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Dietrich was appointed the Artistic Director of NEMPAC Opera Project for their 2019 season for which she staged Rachel Portman’s “The Little Prince” at Boston’s historical Faneuil Hall. This marked the first time that the NEMPAC Opera Project had staged a work by a female composer, and Ms. Dietrich’s staging was chosen by OperaWire as one of the Top 5 Must See Opera in North America for it’s opening weekend. This Fall, Ms. Dietrich joins Yo Soy LOLA’s creative team to stage direct their 2019 collaborative performance at Oberon in Harvard Square entitled “Resiliency: The Masks We Wear” in their mission to reclaim the narrative and portrayal of Latinas in the arts and media.

Her most recent select productions include stage directing a sold-out run of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Marblehead Little Theatre and “Children of Eden” at the Theatre Company of Saugus. An advocate for underrepresented composers, she also staged Pauline Viardot-García’s “Cendrillon” with the Cambridge Chamber Ensemble, where her staging was praised as “particularly convincing…perfectly expressive and deeply touching”.

A music educator and choral conductor, Ms. Dietrich has been on faculty with the North End and Music Performing Arts Center since 2011 as a choral conductor whose choirs have performed with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra under the baton of Christopher Wilkins. Her choir, in 2018, performed as a Prelude Concert to a Landmarks performance at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade with Ms. Dietrich conducting. She is the Director and Co-Founder of the Boston Opera Outreach Troupe, and was a Master Teaching Artist for the Metropolitan Opera Guild. www.DietrichDirectorMezzo.com
