Samar is a family nurse practitioner at University Health and Counseling Services.

After graduating as a Russian Studies major from Columbia University, Samar taught English in China and worked as a journalist for CNN in New York.  While there, her focus on medical stories set Samar on a nursing career path. Samar obtained her NP degree from the Yale School of Nursing. She cares deeply about her patients, their stories, and exploring each person’s individual path to better health.

Having grown up in London, Pakistan, Connecticut and Maine, Samar is grateful to be settled in Portland.  In addition, she relishes building relationships within and learning from the diverse USM community.  Her particular areas of interest include sexual health, contraception and LGBTQ+ care.

When not at USM, Samar can be found spending time with her family, exploring beaches, bookstores, and mountains- and in yoga classes.
