Dr. MacLeod is a professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Computer Science. He has more than two decades of experience designing and developing software technologies to support health research in the developing world. His work focuses on making complex software systems accessible and usable for health researchers who are not computer scientists. He has served as a software architect for MoTeCH, a mobile phone–based information system used by rural health nurses in Ghana, which also supports text messaging and voice calls to notify pregnant women about health practices and clinical appointments.
Dr. MacLeod also designed and developed OpenHDS and the Household Registration System (HRS), software platforms that enable data entry, reporting, and analysis of longitudinal, community-based health data at research centers in developing countries. These systems are the software standard for the INDEPTH network of health research centers (www.indepth-network.org). His current work explores the use of mobile devices for data collection and information dissemination in global health contexts.
