Cate Marvin

Cate Marvin’s first book, World’s Tallest Disaster, was chosen by Robert Pinsky for the 2000 Kathryn A. Morton Prize and published by Sarabande Books in 2001. In 2002, she received the Kate Tufts Discovery Prize. She co-edited with poet Michael Dumanis the anthology Legitimate Dangers: American Poets of the New Century (Sarabande Books, 2006). Her second book of poems, Fragment of the Head of a Queen, for which she received a Whiting Award, was published by Sarabande in 2007. Marvin is Professor of English at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York.  She has taught creative writing at Colby College and in the M.F.A. programs at Columbia University and Lesley University’s Low-Residency M.F.A. Program. Her third book of poems, Oracle, was released from W.W. Norton & Co. in March 2015, for which she received a Guggenheim Fellowship. She lives in Scarborough, Maine, with her family.

Marvin’s work has appeared in numerous periodicals, including Poetry, Ninth Letter, Virginia Quarterly Review, Plougshares, The Paris Review, Washington Square, The New English Review, American Poetry Review, The Normal School, The Baffler, The Awl, Rumpus, TriQuarterly, Tin House, as well as The Best American Poetry editions in 2014 and 2016, edited respectively by Terrance Hayes and Edward Hirsch. 

Her fourth book of poems, Event Horizon, was published by Copper Canyon in 2022.
