James Masi

Dr. James Masi has been Adjunct Professor of Engineering at USM since 2002. He contributes to both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, teaching Statics and Dynamics, Electromagnetic Fields, Materials Science, Energy and the Environment, Senior Design Project, Undergraduate research, and other courses as the opportunity arises. Students and faculty also know him as friendly and innovative mentor and supervisor of student projects with external clients, such as Harris/ITT, Heinz, and Sandia Laboratories. He was also chairperson of the Engineering Department Advisory Board and of the Dean’s Executive Advisory Board. He has performed research working with and supporting undergraduate students over these years.

Dr. Masi moved to Maine in 2001 to continue a distinguished career as a physicist and engineer. He has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in physics and a Ph.D. in materials science. He has 18 years of industrial experience in physics and materials science research. His 39 plus years in academe positions included Adjunct Professor of Physics at Bridgeport Engineering Institute, Lecturer, and Photovoltaics Program Manager of the Institute of Energy Conversion at the University of Delaware, Associate Professor and then Professor (Emeritus) of Electrical Engineering at Western New England University. At Western New England he was chairperson of the EE department for six years and coordinator of the bioengineering program for 18 years. Before coming to Maine, he was the Executive Director of a National Science Foundation Telecommunications Center in Massachusetts for 5 years.

Dr. Masi has been a consultant to over 50 companies, Sandia National Laboratories, and the U.S. Department of the Navy. He has over 60 patents in areas of materials science, rehabilitation, solid state materials and devices, magnetics, displays, nanoparticles, and luminescence; and over 200 publications; three books; and four videos. He is a member of several professional societies (IEEE, ASME, ASM, ASEE, etc.), has received many awards, is a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and has been listed in “American Men and Women in Science,” in “Who’s Who in Technology Today,” and in “Leading Consultants in Technology.”
