“My name is Athan Gikas. I’m from Saco and am a proud Thornton Academy alumni. I played football my whole life, and when making my college decision I ultimately made my decision around football. When Covid-19 interrupted my sophomore season, I made a smart move and returned home. I chose to commute to USM for the final 3 years of my degree.
“Giving up football was a tough decision, but I was warmly met by a supportive community at USM. I narrowed my business focus to a finance track and thoroughly enjoyed many of my professors. I feel confident moving into the job market, with hopes to become a fully licensed Financial Advisor by the end of this year. I’m motivated by my desire to help others while honoring the people who have helped me get to where I am.
“I enjoyed my time at USM, but I would be remiss to not mention the help of the Ann Kleban Memorial scholarship. In 2022 my mother passed away and my family was struck with financial and emotional hardship. With the help of this scholarship, I was able to contribute to my household and personal expenses, while continuing to work and attend classes. In the bigger picture, this scholarship helped three students and their widowed father develop a game plan–without sacrificing a degree I had been working towards for the past 3 years.
“I am so grateful for the support I needed to graduate and begin my career.”
